The Christmas cutouts are very similar to the New Mexico state cookie called biscochitos. We have them mostly around Christmas, For the anise flavor we use anise seeds instead of oil and they are coated in cinnamon and sugar before baking. I will have to give your version a try to see how they compare, I'm sure they will be delicious!
